What is immune system "intelligence"?

In lay terms consider this analogy. People often say that computers are only as good as the data that is fed into them... rubbish in, garbage out..... So imagine that your immune-system is fed the wrong information. It will malfunction. There is growing interest in the links between the environment and the huge increase in auto immune disease worldwide.

Scientists are testing theories that damage by free radicals and long term exposure to environmental pollutants can cause our immune-system to malfunction and that our defense response to pathogens can trigger our T cells to attack the wrong targets.... healthy bone, cartilage and tissue!

Mammals get a massive "download" of immune-data (i n t e l l i g e n c e) from their mothers in colostrum or first breast milk. Birds, reptiles and many fish get this download in the yoke of eggs. All the diseases that the parents have encountered over their lifetime are passed on to the offspring as "i n t e l l i g e n c e".

This data supplements the innate (inherited) programing that we have built-in to our genes as a result of evolution.

Scientific research has intensified into ways of repeating the initial download of pathogen data via mothers milk so that our immune system is regularly updated and stimulated to target the right threats.
